Job Description – Client Accountant
Salary Range: $29-$37/hr (depending on experience and scope)
Location: Remote (with partial availability during California business hours)
Schedule: Flexible hours
The Role
We’re looking for a Client Accountant who can step in and own the day-to-day accounting functions for multiple clients. Because we’re small right now, you’ll wear several hats — from detailed reconciliations and journal entries to handling AP/AR, payroll, and ensuring the books are ready for tax/seasonal filings. As we grow, you’ll also help mentor and review work, and contribute to improving our internal processes.
Key Responsibilities
While this list outlines the core responsibilities, the exact mix of tasks will depend on the clients you’re assigned to. We’re a lean, growing firm, so flexibility and adaptability are key.
Own full-cycle bookkeeping/accounting for assigned clients: journal entries, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
Process accounts payable and accounts receivable; manage vendor records and ensure compliance.
Oversee vendor compliance and 1099 management, ensuring accurate W-9 collection, payment tracking, and timely year-end 1099 filings.
Handle or coordinate payroll entries and ensure payroll is accurately reflected in accounting records.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, merchant processors, and other financial accounts on a regular basis.
Manage sales tax compliance, including monitoring nexus, preparing filings, and coordinating with tax authorities as needed.
Maintain nonprofit and fund accounting records, including class, project, or grant tracking to ensure accurate reporting for donors, boards, and compliance requirements.
Prepare and deliver clean, tax-ready financials (including interfacing with tax preparers).
Support catch-up / cleanup accounting projects as needed (for prior periods, missing reconciliations, etc.).
Maintain adherence to GAAP in all accounting practices.
Support budgeting / forecasting and assist in periodic reviews of actual vs budget.
Track time and tasks well; manage multiple clients / priorities efficiently and within budget.
Communicate clearly and professionally with clients via email/video; respond proactively.
Identify and suggest process improvements, and help integrate software tools for efficiency.
Qualifications
5+ years of accounting / bookkeeping experience, ideally with exposure to full-cycle accounting at a mid-sized company.
Strong experience using QuickBooks Online; comfort jumping into other platforms (Xero, Zoho, Ramp, etc.). *QBO Pro Advisor would be a HUGE plus!
Solid Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, formulas).
Experience reconciling multiple account types (bank, credit card, merchant) and tracking vendor-side compliance matters.
Strong analytical mindset, high attention to detail. The ability to problem solve and come up with improvements, efficiencies, and ideas for the team is a KEY requirement.
Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple clients/time zones where needed.
Good communication skills; comfortable with remote collaboration.
Bonus if you have experience doing cleanup / catch-up accounting, or mentoring / reviewing others’ work.
What We Offer
Salary range: $29-$37/hr, depending on experience and skills.
Flexible schedule with autonomy over your workday.
Fully remote work environment.
Opportunity to work with creative and mission-driven clients.
Paid Time Off (PTO): Generous PTO policy to support rest, balance, and personal needs.
Technology & Home Office Support: Stipend for technology, equipment, or coworking/remote work expenses.
A growing benefits program: while we don’t currently offer health insurance, we are actively working to add coverage. Each quarter, we seek team feedback on what benefits matter most and design our package to support the team. Your voice will be a part of shaping our benefits package as we grow from a single person start up to a full team taking care of clients across the country.
